A four-week A1 shadowing plan with Echo Deutsch

Shadowing works when it is short, honest, and repeated. This plan assumes you are around A1, you can already recognise basic greetings and questions on the page, and you want your mouth to catch up with your reading. You will use Echo Deutsch’s practice player at /practice/, optional episode study pages, and nothing else you have to buy.

Aim for about ten minutes on weekdays. Miss a day? Continue the next day; do not “catch up” with a forty-minute guilt session.

Tools you will use

  • Watch — first pass with German + English captions when the plot is new
  • Shadowing — hear a line, speak in the pause, continue
  • Loop — stick on one cue until the rhythm settles
  • Bookmarks — star lines that still collapse when you speak
  • Episode notes — warm up meaning before you open the video

Keep speed at 0.75×–0.9× for new scenes. Rise toward 1.0× only when you can shadow without freezing on every other line.

Week 1 — Greetings and short turns

Goal: Comfortable formal and informal hellos; fewer frozen pauses.

Episodes: Start with Folge 1: Hallo! and one neighbouring early Folge from the index (for example introductions or “no problem” scenes). Read the study page summary and vocabulary before day 1.

Daily shape (≈10 minutes):

  1. One minute: skim yesterday’s starred lines in Bookmarks mode (or skip if none yet).
  2. Three minutes: Watch a short stretch with both captions.
  3. Five minutes: Shadowing on the same stretch at a slower speed.
  4. One minute: Loop the single worst line; star it.

Weekend: Five minutes only — shadow three starred lines, then delete the star if the line feels easy.

Success check: You can say Guten Tag! Wie geht es Ihnen? and Hallo, wie geht’s? aloud without looking, with roughly natural length.

Week 2 — Food, numbers, and café talk

Goal: Keep shadowing when numbers and food words appear.

Episodes: Pick a café or ordering scene such as Folge 15: Eine Pizza, bitte!. Use the study page glossary for toppings and polite order phrases.

Daily shape:

  1. Warm up with two bookmarked lines from week 1 (speak, do not only read).
  2. Watch new dialogue once.
  3. Shadow in chunks of four to six cues; if you stumble twice on the same cue, switch to Loop for that cue only, then return to Shadowing.
  4. Star at most three new lines per day so the list stays speakable.

Mid-week tweak: Hide English once with Listen → reveal on a stretch you already shadowed. You are checking ears, not translating in your head.

Success check: You can order a simple pizza or drink line from memory and recover when a number appears (zwei, bitte, and similar).

Week 3 — Time and waiting language

Goal: Clock phrases without panic.

Episodes: Folge 33: Wie spät ist es? or another time-heavy A1 Folge. Read the grammar note on time expressions before you practice.

Daily shape:

  1. Dictate one bookmarked line (Dictation mode) — articles and little words matter here (um, halb, Viertel).
  2. Shadow the restaurant or waiting stretch at 0.85×, then once at 1.0× if stable.
  3. Loop any line where you lengthen the pause too much; the pause should match the cue, not become a thinking break.

Friday: Do a “cold” shadow — no Watch pass first — on a stretch you practiced Monday. Expect mistakes; note which words vanish.

Success check: You can produce at least three clock phrases from the episode as they appear there — for example Viertel nach zwölf, halb eins, Viertel vor eins — without reading English first.

Week 4 — Mix, review, and a tiny stretch

Goal: Combine old material; touch one slightly harder Folge.

Episodes: Revisit your strongest week-1 and week-2 scenes for three days. On two days, open a new A1 Folge from the roadmap that feels “almost understandable.”

Daily shape:

  1. Three minutes: Bookmarks-only speaking review across episodes.
  2. Five minutes: Shadowing on either a review scene at 1.0× or a new scene at 0.8×.
  3. Two minutes: Export bookmarks as CSV if you like a paper list, or simply unstar lines that are solid.

End of week: One longer session (fifteen minutes max): Watch → Shadowing → Listen → reveal on a favourite scene. Stop while you still have attention left.

Success check: You have a short personal list of lines you can speak cold, and you know which modes fix which problems (Loop for rhythm, Dictation for spelling/articles, Shadowing for flow).

Rules that keep the plan honest

  • Prefer speaking over re-reading captions.
  • Cap new bookmarks; a fat star list becomes an unread archive.
  • Do not raise speed to “feel advanced.” Speed is earned by clean shadowing.
  • Use study pages when meaning is fuzzy; use the player when sound is the problem.
  • Echo Deutsch stores progress locally — no account — so the plan works on a shared computer only if you accept that data stays in that browser.

If a week feels too hard

Stay on the same Folge another week. Swap Shadowing for more Loop. Drop Listen → reveal until Watch + Shadowing feels boring in a good way. A1 is not a race through Folge numbers; it is a race to make a few dozen lines automatic.

When you finish the month, either restart the four weeks with new episodes or move toward denser A2 film clips using the same daily shape at slightly lower speed. The A1 tips guide and shadowing guide pair with this plan if you want more detail on a single technique.
