Episode summary

Tarek answers a phone call about opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from nine to eleven at night, closed on Monday. He offers Nico another lemonade just as noon hits and the lunch special begins. Today’s choices are roulades with red cabbage and potatoes, fish with vegetables, or Turkish lentil soup. Nico wavers among fish and soup before settling on the roulades. While he waits for Lisa, they compare times — quarter past twelve, half past twelve — but she had said half past eleven. A call reveals the job interview is running long; Lisa will arrive at a quarter to one, in forty-five minutes. Tarek introduces himself, Nico does the same, and Tarek asks for a hand. Clock phrases and menu vocabulary carry the whole restaurant scene from start to finish.

Grammar & usage focus

Telling time: Viertel nach, halb, Viertel vor

German clock talk in this episode uses classic fractions of the hour. Viertel nach zwölf is 12:15. Halb eins means 12:30 (half of the next hour). Viertel vor eins is 12:45. People also ask Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es? Practice converting each phrase to digital time so halb does not trick you — it always looks forward to the coming hour.

Examples

  • Es ist Viertel nach zwölf — das Mittagsangebot beginnt.
  • Sie kommt um Viertel vor eins, also um 12:45 Uhr.

Tips for shadowing this episode

Draw a clock and label Viertel nach, halb, and Viertel vor for twelve/one while the scene plays. Order the lunch menu aloud once, changing your mind like Nico did — good practice for ich nehme …. Note geöffnet vs geschlossen when you copy opening-hours sentences from other shops.
