What is Echo Deutsch?
Echo Deutsch is a free browser tool for practicing German with Deutsche Welle’s Nicos Weg videos on YouTube. It adds dual captions, slower speeds, shadowing pauses, looping, listen→reveal, light dictation, and bookmarks. See the About page for a fuller overview, or open the practice player to start.
Is Echo Deutsch affiliated with Deutsche Welle or Nicos Weg?
No. Echo Deutsch is an independent learner project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Deutsche Welle (DW) or the Nicos Weg course team. We embed DW’s official YouTube videos; we do not host or redistribute video files.
How does shadowing work in this app?
In Shadowing mode, the player plays a caption line, then pauses so you can say it aloud — like an echo. You can adjust the pause gap and replay a line before continuing. For a step-by-step routine, read the shadowing guide.
Do I need a YouTube account?
No. You can watch the embedded videos and use the study modes without signing in to YouTube. YouTube’s own player and policies still apply to the embed (see Google/YouTube privacy links on the Privacy page).
Does Echo Deutsch work offline?
Not fully. The practice UI and static caption files can load from the site’s static export, but the video itself comes from YouTube and needs a network connection. Bookmarks and settings stay in your browser even if you close the tab.
Do I need an account on Echo Deutsch?
No accounts and no logins. There is no learner profile on our servers. Progress tools like bookmarks and last-watched video live in your browser’s localStorage only.
What data do you store? Is my privacy protected?
We store practice preferences and bookmarks in localStorage on your device — not in an Echo Deutsch account database. We do not currently run our own analytics or ad scripts. YouTube embeds are governed by Google’s policies. Full details: Privacy Policy.
Does it work well on mobile?
Yes. The practice screen keeps the player and captions front and center. Level, speed, subtitles, and technique settings live in an Options drawer so the phone UI stays usable. Site pages (guides, FAQ, about) are also laid out for narrow screens.
Which subtitle languages are available?
When caption data exists for a video, you can show German, English, or both. Some episodes may not have cues yet; those still play for watching, but synced practice modes need a captions file. Pick titles marked with captions in Options → Level & video.
Which levels can I practice (A1, A2, B1)?
The catalog includes A1 (full film + many episodes), plus A2 and B1 full films, all via official YouTube embeds. Beginners often start with A1 episodes; see A1 tips and A2/B1 tips.
Will you show ads or use AdSense later?
Possibly. Today the site does not load AdSense or other ad networks. If we add advertising or analytics later, we will update the Privacy Policy before enabling those scripts and describe what choices you have (including consent where required).
