Episode summary

The opening episode is a parade of everyday German greetings. First, Herr Müller and Frau Schneider exchange a formal Guten Morgen and ask Wie geht es Ihnen?, answering with Danke, gut and Und Ihnen?. A second formal exchange uses Guten Tag with Frau Kamp, who replies Sehr gut, danke. The tone then shifts to informal speech: Lena greets her Opa, Sarah asks Wie geht’s dir?, and Tom answers Super, danke. Und dir?. Later, someone compliments a bag—Die Tasche ist schön!—and needs Entschuldigung when the other person does not catch it. Emma is called away with komm jetzt, and a street name, Adalbert-Stifter-Straße, appears at the end. The scene’s job is simple: hear formal Sie versus informal du greetings, time-of-day hellos, and a short apology, all in clear, repeatable turns.

Grammar & usage focus

Formal Sie vs. informal du in greetings

German switches greeting style by relationship. With adults you do not know well, use Sie: Wie geht es Ihnen? and answer Und Ihnen?. With friends, family, and young people, use du: Wie geht’s dir? / Und dir?. Time-of-day phrases (Guten Morgen, Guten Tag) work in both styles; what changes is the pronoun and verb form that follow.

Examples

  • Guten Morgen, Frau Schneider. Wie geht es Ihnen heute?
  • Hi Tom, wie geht’s dir? Mir geht’s super!

Tips for shadowing this episode

Shadow one formal exchange and one informal exchange back-to-back so your ear hears Ihnen versus dir. Pause after each greeting and answer out loud with Danke, gut or Super, danke before you continue. When you hear Entschuldigung, note whether it means “sorry I bumped you” or “sorry, I didn’t catch that”—both appear in daily speech.
