New: study pages for all 71 Nicos Weg A1 episodes

Echo Deutsch now has a study page for each of the 71 A1 Nicos Weg episodes in the catalog. They live under /episodes/, listed by level, and each page is written by hand — not generated from captions and not copied from Deutsche Welle’s course site.

Full A2/B1 films are not auto-filled with placeholder notes. This launch is A1 Folgen only, because that is where most self-learners need a calm on-ramp before denser film speech.

What each study page includes

Open any Folge and you will see the same structure, filled with episode-specific material:

  1. Blurb and summary — what happens in the scene in plain English, with the German phrases that carry the plot named in context (for example greetings, food orders, or clock talk), not as a caption dump.
  2. Vocabulary — useful words and chunks with article where it matters, plural when it helps, an English gloss, and a short example sentence you might actually say.
  3. Grammar focus — one teaching point that fits the episode (formal vs informal address, separable verbs, time expressions, and so on), with German examples.
  4. Comprehension questions — a few checks with answers so you can test whether the scene landed before you rush into shadowing.
  5. Tips and quotes — practical notes for practice, plus a couple of memorable lines from the dialogue.
  6. Practice link — “Practice this episode” opens the Echo Deutsch player at /practice/?v=… for that YouTube id.

The pages are original teaching notes. They exist so you can warm up your ears and vocabulary before you fight the video at full speed.

How to use a page with the player

A simple loop that works for most A1 learners:

  1. Read the summary once without pausing on every unknown word.
  2. Skim the vocabulary list; say each German item aloud once.
  3. Read the grammar focus and the example sentences.
  4. Answer the comprehension questions from memory, then check.
  5. Click Practice this episode, start in Watch with both captions, then switch to Shadowing or Loop on the lines that still feel sticky.
  6. Star two or three cues in the player and come back tomorrow for a five-minute review.

You do not need to finish the whole episode in one sitting. Ten focused minutes on a handful of turns beats a passive watch-through.

Where to start

If you are new to Nicos Weg, begin with early Folgen such as Folge 1: Hallo! for greetings, then move toward everyday scenes like food and time (for example Folge 15: Eine Pizza, bitte! and Folge 33: Wie spät ist es?). The A1 episode roadmap describes a three-pass path through the level without burnout.

Learners who already know the story can still use study pages as a glossary refresh: open the Folge you are about to shadow, scan only the vocabulary and grammar blocks, then jump into /practice/.

What this is not

  • Not a full DW lesson replacement. Deutsche Welle’s own exercises and videos remain the course; Echo Deutsch is an independent practice companion.
  • Not machine-filled filler. If a page exists, it was written for that episode.
  • Not available yet as auto-generated A2/B1 study packs. Use the player and the A2/B1 tips guide for denser films until notes exist.

Finding pages later

Use the episodes index to browse by level. Each study page has its own title, meta description, and canonical URL so you can bookmark or share a single Folge. The sitemap lists them as well.

Practice data — bookmarks, streak, last video — still stays in your browser. Opening a study page does not require an account.

If you want a longer speaking routine after the notes, pair a Folge with the shadowing guide or the ten-minute shadowing routine. The study page prepares meaning; the player trains sound.
