Turn Nicos Weg lines into vocabulary

The fastest way to forget a German word is to meet it alone on a list. The same word inside a café order, a greeting, or a question — spoken aloud — has a better chance of surviving until tomorrow. Collect chunks, not orphans

Prefer multi-word chunks: Wie geht’s?, Ich hätte gern…, Kannst du das bitte wiederholen?. Chunks carry grammar and melody with them. When you bookmark in the player, you are saving a timed line — German plus English — not a naked lemma. That is intentional.

Cap yourself: three to five bookmarks per session. More than that becomes a museum you never visit.

A capture workflow inside the player

1. Watch or shadow a short stretch in the practice player.
2. When a line feels useful and slightly hard, star/bookmark it.
3. Switch to Bookmarks (in Options → Technique) and replay only those lines.
4. Shadow each bookmark once. If your mouth stumbles, Loop it until the rhythm lands.
5. Optional: Dictation on one bookmark — type the German from memory, then check. Great for little words (ins, zum, articles) you keep mis-hearing.

Why shadowing beats highlighting

Highlighting a word tells your brain “this exists.” Shadowing tells your brain “this is something I say.” Vocabulary for speaking needs motor memory. Pair every new chunk with at least one spoken pass. Details: shadowing guide.

Personalize one slot

After you can say the line, change one detail: name, city, drink, time. Keep the frame. Example: from a café line, swap the item you order. That tiny rewrite moves the chunk from “Nico’s line” to “my line” without inventing grammar from scratch.

Review without a separate flashcard app (at first)

You can stay inside Echo Deutsch for early review:

• Same day: replay bookmarks before you close the tab.
• Next day: open Bookmarks first — before new plot. Two minutes is enough.
• End of week: delete bookmarks you can say cold; keep the sticky ones.

If you later export lines to a flashcard tool, paste the full German sentence and a short cue (English or a situation note). Still avoid one-word cards when the goal is conversation.

Tie vocab to listening and level

Vocabulary sticks better when your ears already almost hear it. Do a short listening pass on the scene before you harvest bookmarks. At A1, harvest greetings, questions, and polite requests (A1 tips). At A2/B1, harvest clause frames and connectors — not only nouns (A2/B1 tips).

What to skip

• Copying every unknown word from an episode — overwhelm kills review.
• Saving slang you will never say before you own the basics.
• Silent “study” where you never speak the chunk aloud.
