Episode summary

Name practice turns into a game in this episode. Nico models Ich heiße Nico, then asks the classic follow-up: Hallo, wie heißt du? Lisa answers Ich heiße Lisa, and the pattern is drilled until it sticks. Emma, in a playful mood, muddles the letters of Nico’s name—someone jokes that the N is missing—and Nico is left half-finishing Ich heiße …. Daily life interrupts the lesson: a driver needs a moment because Ich muss noch kurz tanken, and later voices shout Taxi! Stopp! Under the humor, the target is solid: say your name with ich heiße, ask wie heißt du?, and recognize when someone is only teasing. By the end you should be able to introduce yourself and ask someone else’s name without freezing, even if a busy street scene is happening around you.

Grammar & usage focus

Ich heiße … / Wie heißt du?

The verb heißen links a person to a name. In the present tense you get ich heiße, du heißt, er/sie heißt. The standard informal question is Wie heißt du?; a fuller greeting often starts with Hallo, ich heiße … Und wie heißt du?. For polite situations you would later learn Wie heißen Sie?, but this episode stays with the du-form among people who are already on informal terms.

Examples

  • Hallo, ich heiße Mara. Und wie heißt du?
  • Er heißt Jonas, nicht Johann.
