Episode summary

Standing at Yara’s Fahrradladen, the visitors face the trip home. Someone assumes they will take the bus again, but the plan changes: ride the U-Bahn as far as the university, then walk the rest—or, if Emma prefers, take the streetcar instead. Emma votes Straßenbahn. A nearby stop sits just behind the intersection, and there is talk of turning left at the next street. Before they leave, Emma must say goodbye after her stay; she does not want to, yet she promises it was cool and that she will come again. Farewells pile up—Tschüss, Ciao, Viel Glück—and someone asks whether they will meet again, getting an uncertain “Ich weiß es nicht.” Transport words and parting phrases share the spotlight in this short exit scene.

Mit + transport: mit dem Bus, mit der U-Bahn, mit der Straßenbahn

To say how you travel, German uses mit + definite article + vehicle. Bus is masculine (mit dem Bus), U-Bahn and Straßenbahn are feminine (mit der U-Bahn, mit der Straßenbahn). Walking is not mit—use zu Fuß. Destination often follows with bis zur (bis zur Uni).

Examples

  • Wir fahren mit der U-Bahn bis zur Uni und gehen dann zu Fuß.
  • Emma möchte lieber mit der Straßenbahn fahren.

Tips for shadowing this episode

Drill the three mit-phrases in a loop: mit dem Bus, mit der U-Bahn, mit der Straßenbahn. Record yourself saying Emma’s goodbye lines slower than the video, then match the speed. Notice informal closings (Tschüss, Ciao) versus the warmer Viel Glück in the same scene.
