Episode summary

Before Lisa’s job interview, someone shares an address and phone number; another person already knows the place and will come along tomorrow. Asked about her profession, Lisa confirms she is a teacher of German and English but has no permanent post at a school. The language courses are only a side job; she needs real work now. Friends wish her luck as she leaves. Conversation then turns to Nico’s future and to Max, who worked in a bank for a long time as a bank clerk — yet he runs the restaurant with Tarek. Tarek is actually an electrician by trade. They stay because restaurant work is interesting, fun, and they are the bosses. The episode maps job titles, side jobs, and saying what you like about work in clear A1 sentences.

Grammar & usage focus

Saying your job: Ich bin … / von Beruf

At A1 you usually name a job with Ich bin + profession (Ich bin Lehrerin) or add von Beruf for “by profession” (Er ist Elektriker von Beruf). Doch answers a negative question when the truth is yes: „Arbeitest du nicht als Lehrerin?“ — „Doch.“ Side jobs and permanent posts need simple contrasts: nur ein Nebenjob versus eine richtige Arbeit. Practice both the title and a one-line reason you like or need the work.

Examples

  • Ich bin Lehrerin, aber ich habe keine feste Arbeit an einer Schule.
  • Er ist Elektriker von Beruf und mag seinen Job im Restaurant.

Tips for shadowing this episode

Build a three-line self-intro: Ich bin …, von Beruf …, jetzt arbeite ich …. Shadow the good-luck pair Viel Erfolg / Viel Glück before Lisa leaves. Notice Doch after a negative question — answer out loud so you do not default to Ja by mistake.
