Episode summary

Lisa bursts in apologizing: she is much too late and normally not so unpunctual. Traffic was a disaster; she spent half an hour in a jam, and someone patiently explains that Stau means too many cars moving very slowly. The conversation turns to Nico’s housing problem. Their apartment is being renovated, the heating is broken, and Nawin, Nina, Sebastian, and Lisa leave on vacation the day after tomorrow. The hostel has no free rooms — everything is reserved. Nico’s bag and passport are still missing, which makes the stay even harder. Then Inge dismisses the hostel idea and offers space at her place for a few days, handing over her address and arranging to see him tomorrow. Warm hospitality solves what booking systems could not in this short A1 scene.

Grammar & usage focus

Zu + adjective for “too …”

Lisa says she is viel zu spät. Zu before an adjective means “too” in the sense of excessively: zu spät, zu laut, zu teuer. Intensifiers like viel can come before zu (viel zu spät). This is different from the preposition zu meaning “to.” Keep the stress on zu when you mean excess, and pair it with a clear adjective.

Examples

  • Ich bin viel zu spät — der Stau war schlimm.
  • Das Hostel ist zu voll; alle Zimmer sind reserviert.
