Episode summary

A flurry of goodbyes fills the doorway—Auf Wiedersehen, Ciao, Tschüss, Bis bald—before Lisa’s phone rings. She answers about an internet ad: they are still looking for someone. The apartment has a terrace, but there is no elevator in the building and they do not have a garage; she invites the caller to visit anyway. Mid-call she needs to write something down and asks for a pen, then a slip of paper. A friend has no pen but finds a note sheet. Lisa confirms the appointment for half past three with a man named Marvin Graupner. After hanging up she explains: that was an applicant for Nawin’s room. Because Nawin is moving to France, they need a new tenant, and Marvin is coming today. First, though, they still plan to visit Nico’s aunt. On the way out they practice one more noun: die Tür.

Grammar & usage focus

Negating nouns with kein / keine / keinen

To say you do not have something, German usually replaces ein with kein. The ending matches gender and case: kein Aufzug (masculine nominative), keine Garage (feminine), keinen Stift (masculine accusative after haben). In this episode you hear both description of the building—kein Aufzug, keine Garage—and the everyday Ich hab keinen Stift. Positive counterparts stay with ein / eine / einen when the thing exists.

Examples

  • Ich habe keinen Stift, aber ich habe einen Zettel.
  • In dem Haus ist kein Aufzug.

Tips for shadowing this episode

Drill kein with the accusative objects you actually lose: keinen Stift, keine Tasche, kein Handy. Phone German is full of fillers like Einen Moment bitte—pause the video and repeat Lisa’s call tone. Halb vier means 3:30; German half-hours name the coming hour, not the last one.
